Switzerland 3

Philippe Senderos (FC Everton, ENG) & Steve von Bergen (Hertha BSC)
vs. Spain (1:0) | World Cup | 2010 in South Africa

The World Cup 2010 in South Africa was by far my favourite big tournament so far. I just loved the atmosphere, the vuvuzela, the fact that is was finally in Africa, but also the football. It was just perfect. And the World Cup did come up with a few oddities, which are summed up by the fact that New Zealand was the only unbeaten team of the tournament, going out in the group stage with 3 draws. That's because Spain, despite otherwise having a spotless tournament, lost their opening match to the World Cup - 0:1 to Switzerland. The goalscorer, Gelson Fernandes, was born in Africa, in Cape Verde to be more precise, and moved to Switzerland aged 5, when his dad became the groundskeeper of FC Sion, the club Gelson would start to play at later.

Now, the shirt was not as special as that match. It had a weird logo, that the FA ditched after just that one World Cup, and was otherwise just a really dull template from Nike. But, this shirt is matchworn. It came from someone close to Hertha, the club Steve van Bergen played at, even in the UEFA Cup at the time. It was worn in a friendly, though, not during the World Cup. That would have probably cost me more than the 70€ I paid for this one.
