Unknown Player vs. Barawa (3:1) | Friendly | 2018 in London |
Surrey is a bit of an oddity in international football. It is a historic region in Southern England that is not home to a linguistic or ethnic minority and thus never quite fit into the CONIFA universe. Yet, it does have a strong regional identification, which led to the emergence of a representative football body and fielding a selection from 2018 onwards. It also is just a fantastic grassroots organisation that has done a lot for football locally, including an incredible friendly match between Surrey's women's football selection and the Afghanistan national team in exile following the Taliban takeover. Finally, it is managed by Danny, one of the nicest people I ever met in the football world.
It was Danny who sold me this shirt, too. It is matchworn and was worn during a friendly match vs. Barawa, which helped the Bravanese to prepare for the World Football Cup 2018 in London, which it formally hosted. It is one of those full-sublimination EV2 shirts and I am not a big fan of these - but for a first ever kit, it is still stunning. Later Surrey shirts by far exceeded this one even. I was happy to buy it for 50ish Euro to help raising some funds for the team to proceed, too. Good luck Danny and Surrey IFA with everything you are planning!
