When I went to the CONIFA Annual General Meeting in Jersey in January 2020, I was expecting great debates and discussions about the future of the organisation. I was certainly not expecting to be handed over a Kabylia national team shirt, matchworn from the 2018 World Football Cup of CONIFA in London, which I organised. But on a quiet morning in the hotel that hosted the meeting, the president of the football association came to me and handed me over this absolute beauty of a shirt, made by the small French manufacturer Volkani.
The shirt was worn in the 2018 World Football Cup in London, where Kabylia played their only major tournament to date. After losses against Panjab and Western Armenia and a goalless draw with the United Koreans in Japan, they ended up at the bottom of their group. After beating Matabeleland on penalties and Tibet in a 8:1 thrashing, they lost against Abkhazia to finish 10th in the 16 team tournament. I do hope that we will see the team return one day, as I absolutely loved seeing them play - and even more to meet the players and the staff in the hotel every day. They were an incredibly nice bunch of people.
